  • At The University of Dayton’s Roesch Library the objective of the renovation was to re-imagine the first two floors in order to create modern, flexible spaces that would accommodate current and future research as well as a collaborative environment for students and faculty to interact. From formal and informal user feedback it was clear that the students and staff wanted to build on the variety of teaching and learning relationships that a single space can support. This is a place where students, faculty, or staff can study alone or collaboratively in addition to offering resources to find information. On any given day, students can work with other students, or they can meet and work with faculty. In this sense, the outcomes of the Roesch Re-fresh have evolved to include both information consumption and knowledge creation. The Roesch Re-fresh was able to make learning visible by providing an ample amount of study and training rooms throughout the two floors. These study rooms vary in shape and size, but the use of glass and openness give it the presence of a learning facility along with a transparency to connect the students with the staff.

  • Although he knew athletics made a huge component of college campuses, Roesch always believed academics came first. He never gave any of the athletes any preferential treatment and he never gave time off for students for athletic events. Two incidents in his time at UD demonstrated this. In Don Donoher’s first full season in 1964-65, the basketball team had a great year and were expected to make the NCAA Tournament. At an Academic Council meeting on February 22, 1965, the council prepared a statement in anticipation of this. The statement said that classes would not be cancelled for any games in the regular season or in the postseason. If the students did not find this acceptable, then any invitation to the tournament for UD will not be accepted.[32] A few months later, at another Academic Council meeting on April 28, an announcement was made that athletes are to be treated as general students and not to be given any special treatment.[33] Fr. Roesch valued academics deeply and his strict attitude came out when it came to these kinds of matters.
