Early Life – She was born on 3 July 1965 in Frederikshavn, Denmark, to Bent Nielsen and Laila Matzigkeit. Her father was a bus driver whereas her mother was an insurance clerk, actress, and reviewer of musicals). She has two brothers named Bent Nielsen Jr and Ulrich Nielsen, and a sister Søs Nielsen.

Her first breakthrough role came in 2000 when she was chosen to play the role of Lucilla in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator alongside Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. She received many awards and nominations for her performance in the film and besides that, received several appreciation from critics.
Furthermore, she starred in several American films including Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), The Hunted (2003), The Ice Harvest (2005), and The Runner (2015).
