Back To Basics: 5 Minute Prep Easy Pizza Dough Recipe (1)

When I was a kid my mom used to make us homemade pizza every Friday night. It was the highlight of my week. Friday was the one night when we were allowed to sit in the living room at “tv tables” and watch TV while we ate dinner. I remember her spending vast amounts of time pre-making the dough and assembling each of the pizzas so that when my dad got home from work all they had to do was pop the pizzas in the oven and we were good to go. As soon as one pizza came out, she’d pop another one in, and in my memory we watched tv and ate slice after slice of hot, gooey pizza all evening long.

I am not the same type of mom as my mom was. I love delicious, homemade food but in most cases I don’t want to spend hours slaving away in the kitchen by myself to make it. My family loves homemade pizza night as much as I did when I was a kid though and thanks to the invention of stand mixers (ok they probably had stand mixers when I was a kid too… but they weren’t as prevalent as they are now) I’m able to make homemade pizzas that are just as delicious as I remember my mom’s being, but in a fraction of the time.

This dough is quick and easy to make. It comes together in about 5 minutes. I usually make a batch of it in the morning while my kids are eating breakfast, leave it on the counter to rise and then we make the pizzas as a family in the evening. Wanting to make this pizza dough last minute? No worries, leave it on the counter to rise for 20-30 minutes and you are set!

I make this dough a ton and it’s always a hit. I teach cooking classes for kids and for the last class we always make homemade pizza. I divide the dough into pieces and let each child make their own pizza. This is usually what we do at home too.

Ingredients:

-2 cups warm water

-2 teaspoon instant yeast

-2 teaspoon sugar

-4 cups all-purpose flour

-2 teaspoon salt

-Olive Oil (1-2 tablespoons to coat dough)

You May Also Need:

-Stand Mixer (this is the one I own)

-Parchment Paper (like this)

Directions:

Step 1: In a glass measuring cup or bowl combine warm water, yeast and sugar. Stir and let sit while you complete step 2.

Step 2: Attach your dough hook to your stand mixer. Put flour and salt in the bowl of your stand mixer and mix on low speed.

Step 3: Your yeast water mixture should be starting to foam. Slowly pour it 1/4 cup at a time into your flour mixture with your mixer on medium speed. Watch for your dough to start to come together. You may not need to add all of the yeast water to the dough. You want your dough to come together and become a nice smooth ball. If you accidentally add too much water, add a bit more flour. Let your stand mixer knead the dough for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4:Remove the dough from the mixer and transfer to a floured work surface. Knead dough by hand for 1 minute.

Step 5: Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Let the dough rise for about 30 minutes. (Optional, knead the dough a second time and leave to rise a second time).

Step 6: Use dough right away, refrigerate in sealed container or freeze in an airtight bag.

When your ready to make your pizzas:

Bring dough to room temperature. Preheat oven to 400F. Divide dough into however many pizzas you would like to make and roll out. My favorite way to do this is by placing the dough onto a piece of parchment paper, laying another piece of parchment paper on top and using a rolling pin to roll the pizza dough nice and thin. This dough puffs up quite a bit in the oven so I suggest rolling it as thin as possible. I cook my pizzas right on the parchment paper. After you roll your dough out, before adding the toppings, put the dough into the oven to parbake for 10 minutes. Remove the dough, add your sauce and toppings and return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
